Art and Translation: from one to another

With Saskia Olde Wolbers, Junko Otake and Prof. Neil Smith.

Is it only possible to think the thoughts we have the language to express? In an increasingly globalised world, the tasks of translation are more significant than ever. But when art relies on both verbal and non-verbal communication, is it possible not to get lost in translation?

Join Professor Neil Smith as he outlines some of the problems in realising the intentions of the originator in translation, and artists Junko Otake and Saskia Olde Wolbers as they present their latest work and discuss how they cross cultural boundaries. Hosted by The Showroom and in celebration of the ninth edition of LINE Magazine, this evening takes a tour through the latest debates and perspectives on art and translation.

Saskia Olde Wolbers is represented by Maureen Paley and has exhibited in such venues at MOCA San Diego and Tate Britain. She will expound on her work as it relates to the imaginative potential of translation from one form to another.

Prof. Neil Smith was the leading professor in the UCL Division of Psychology and Language Sciences, and his research interests include the acquisition of phonology, first and second language acquisition and the work of Noam Chomsky.

Junko Otake recently graduated from the Slade School of Fine Art, and her practice investigates concepts of miscommunication and recomposition. She will discuss her recent work, which plays on the breakdown of conversations and explores the liminal spaces between languages.

Art in Translation will be held at The Showroom Gallery, London, on Wednesday 18th April 2012, at 7pm.
